Kokanee - it's the salmon out here

It’s that time of year again. The leaves turn colour and so do the streams!
The kokanee salmon have returned and are starting their spawn, drawing folks from all over the Okanagan to come check them out. Our favorite spot to check them out is at Mission Creek, accessible by the Greenway.

There are plenty of fun aspects to this adventure, and lots of learning opportunities for the kids, however I did encounter one awkward question today… what is that cloudy white stuff some of the salmon are leaving… Ummmm it’s just a powder to make them lay their eggs better! Then there’s the death part.

Unfortunately for these guys, this amazing journey means it’s time to die. While it’s sad, it’s a good way to teach the kids the circle of life!

As this is their last selfless act, make sure to give them space. Stay on trails and out of the water! Keeps dogs on leash and your feet out of the water. Have fun and try to learn something new.
